The short answer
Start with a point-up pattern: cast on a few stitches at the point and increase at both edges every row or every other row until it is wide enough. Use a smooth worsted or chunky wool on needles the yarn label suggests, and a circular needle once the rows get long. The free Easiest Triangle on Ravelry is written this way.
The three constructions
How triangle scarves are knitted
| Construction | How it works | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Point up | Cast on a few stitches at the point, increase at both edges, bind off along the long edge | Beginners; knitting until the yarn runs out |
| Top down | Start at the center of the long edge, increase at the edges and the center spine | Lace shawls; classic shawl shapes |
| Side to side | Start at one tip, increase on one edge to the middle, then decrease | Stripes; asymmetric scarves |

Tips from the pattern notes
- Add ties. Pick up stitches at each corner and knit a narrow strip or i-cord. Ties make a small triangle easy to knot.
- Edges curl in stockinette. Knit the first and last few stitches in garter to keep them flat.
- Stop at the right size. Around 40 to 60 inches across suits the neck. See the size guide.

Questions people ask
How much yarn do I need for a triangle scarf?
It depends on the yarn weight and size. The notes to the free Easiest Triangle pattern put a neck scarf at about 50 grams, a tiny shawl at about 100 grams and a proper shawl at about 300 grams. Always check your pattern.
What is the easiest triangle scarf to knit?
A garter or stockinette triangle worked from the point up with an increase at each edge. Garter stitch lies flat; stockinette curls at the edges unless it has a border.
Can I sell scarves I knit from a free pattern?
It depends on the designer’s terms, which are usually on the pattern page. Some allow small-scale sales of finished items with credit; check before you sell.
