Cashmere and wool triangle scarves, for real cold

If the scarf has to keep you warm, the fiber matters more than the brand. Here is how cashmere, merino, lambswool and mohair differ, and how to read the label.

The short answer

Cashmere is the softest and lightest for its warmth; merino is soft, warm and easier to care for; lambswool is sturdy and a little rougher; mohair gives a fuzzy halo. Check the percentages: a "cashmere blend" can be mostly something else.

Cold weather knots

The Zoe Report suggests tying close to the neck and double knotting for cold, windy weather. That is the front knot or bib pulled snug. Wear a wool triangle over your hair and tied under the chin, the way Harper’s Bazaar described Kendall Jenner’s wool scarf, when it is windy.

Care

Dry wool and cashmere flat; Woolmark warns against hangers, lines and direct heat. A sweater comb handles pills. Full steps: how to wash a scarf.

Questions people ask

Is cashmere warmer than wool?

Cashmere is generally considered warmer for its weight and softer, but a thick wool knit can be just as warm. Thickness and how close the scarf sits at the neck matter as much as fiber.

Why does my wool scarf itch?

Coarser wool fibers prickle sensitive skin. Merino and cashmere are finer. If wool still bothers you, try a blend with cotton or silk, or wear a silk scarf underneath.

Will a cashmere scarf pill?

Most knits pill a little where they rub, especially at first. A sweater comb or fabric shaver removes pills. Looser, shorter fibers pill more.
